What we can learn from Kobe

The short answer is a lot. The slightly longer answer is a bit more tricky. His passing hit me, as well as many others around the world, very hard. I’ve always been a fan of his sporting talent. However, his skills on the court are not the sole reason for his legend status, and probably not even the main reason. Kobe had an energy about him. For me he epitomizes what EazyLiving is supposed to be. Getting every inch out of life that you can. Not taking shit from anyone. Working hard to get what you deserve. Relentless elevation. Although his life was cut short, in my view, he lived more life than most of us. So what can we learn from Kobe’s legacy?

Put in the work

If you’ve got a goal, whether it be clear, a pipe dream, or even one that doesn’t exist yet, it’s time to start working. In a sense Kobe was lucky to have something to work towards. He wanted to be the best ever and so trained as such. For many of us, me included, the goal is not so clear. This is no excuse. Start putting effort into everything you do. This way, when that opportunity arises you’ll have the right mindset, confidence and ability to achieve whatever it may be.

Leave a legacy you can be proud of

Being a person you can be proud of is different for everyone. Although, I believe for most of there are some overlaps. Kobe was remembered for his work rate, but also by the way he treated others. He chose to build those around him up, rather than knock them down (aside from a couple of teammates). Everyone expected him to want a son to carry on his legacy. He didn’t see it that way. He loved being a Dad to girls, and you can see from the highlights of Gigi that she carried that Mamba mentality. Just from the way you carry yourself can have a huge impact on the people around you. In Kobe’s case the whole world. In life and death, he’s imparted a powerful message. Anyone can carry that Mamba mentality. Your accolades don’t define you as a person. You are remembered through the words of your peers. For this reason, Kobe’s legacy will be eternal.

Do more, be happier

Lastly, I’ll leave you with something I only learnt a few weeks ago. For years I’ve been a bare minimum kind of guy. Get the task done as quickly and easily as possible so I can get home and relax. In my head that was the key to happiness. Shorten the tough times to extend the easier ones. A recent change in my mindset pushed me to stop being such a slob and give trying a go. It’s definitely not easy, but since Kobe’s death I’ve been more committed to stick with it. Once you get into the groove of it, you’ll notice how small changes can become big ones. Getting up earlier, going to the gym every day, cooking dinner every night. These little things that are so easy to put off can actually be the root of happiness. Just as Kobe did throughout his career, getting in the gym first, leaving last and bringing intensity wherever possible. He was always willing to do more. Even since his career finished, his work rate remained and he seemed happier because of it. I cant say whether this will work for everyone, but I know it has for me. Life isn’t meant to be easy and I for one wouldn’t want it to be. The rainbow comes after the rain. Try Eazy Living.
