Want to be great at something? Get a coach

A couple years old but still one my favourite Ted Talks. In a world where we can get information on how to do anything at the click of a button, the notion of seeking out physical ‘experts’ to guide and offer advice has dwindled.

Atul rightly points out that in the world of sport, it doesn’t matter how good you are, you always have a coach. It’s understood and accepted that in order to get better, an outside set of eyes is required. Yet, even though I and many others grow up in a sports world, when we step out that bubble we don’t carry the same principle. For me personally a large barrier was my ego and sense of self-worth. For things considered below me, I may shut-off to the feedback. Thus missing a great opportunity for real-time advice on how to get better.

A coach doesn’t have to have the letters across their back, nor do you need to pay them. If someone is willing to hear you out, keep you accountable or partner-up in a pursuit, it can be just as valuable.

What are you trying to get great at?
